Elder Abuse: Financial Abuse of the Elderly is Rampant

An excellent article on elder abuse written by Herb Weisbaum was published today on msnbc.com’s website. The article discusses Mickey Rooney’s testimony: “For years I suffered silently, unable to muster the courage to seek the help I knew I needed.” However, the article goes further to discuss the rampant financial abuse of the elderly and sites a study by Metlife Mature Market Institute in 2009 which estimates financial losses from this type of elder abuse to be at least $2.6 billion a year.

The article discusses many of the opportunities for predators – exploitation in a nursing home or assisted living facility, exploitation from home health aides, exploitation by family members and con artists. There is also a very disturbing story about an elderly couple whose live-in care taker took everything from them including all their assets and their home.
