Nursing Home Abuse: Senate Bill Requiring Informed Consent For Antipsychotics

On September 20, 2012, Senators Kohl (D-WI), Grassley (R-IA) and Blumental (D-CT) introduced Senate Bill 3604, the Improving Dementia Care Treatment for Older Adults Act, which would require nursing homes, accepting Medicare and Medicaid, to obtain informed consent before antipsychotic medication is prescribed for a resident with dementia.  The bill requires a process to be developed for providing information about side effects, risks and alternative treatments.
