A new article published in Therapeutic Advances in Chronic Disease, 12/29/11, discusses the importance of a multidisciplinary review of the care and treatment of the elderly. This article emphasizes the problems with drug interactions and use of anti-psychotic medications.
The article recommends a team approach. The general practitioner and pharmacist should not be replaced. Rather, an interdisciplinary team consisting of a general practitioner, pharmacist and geriatrician is suggested. The article concludes that a multidisciplinary review and a comprehensive geriatric assessment reduces inappropriate medications and in turn, the risks caused by inappropriate medication such as falls.
