The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a report in February, 2013 outlining the results of a study that was conducted in 42 states in 2009 with 1.1 million patient visits. The study found that Medicare paid 5.1B for poor care in skilled nursing facilities. The study also found that many of these facilities did not issue individualized care plans for the residents and that residents’ needs were not met. The nursing homes were billing Medicare for services not done or not needed. Examples include administration of anti psychotic medications even though there could have been serious side effects and that special plans weren’t prepared for a residents discharge or transfer to another setting.
