Nursing Home Abuse: Lack of RN on Floor

On July 31, 2014, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky introduced a new bill, Put a Registered Nurse in the Nursing Home Act,  H.R. 5373.  This bill seeks to require that a nursing home, accepting Medicare and Medicaid payments, have a registered nurse (R.N.) on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  It is the RNs’  job to assess residents’ conditions.  At present, the requirement for an RN is 8 hours a day so for 16 hours a day there is no one to assess changes in condition and maximize safety on admission an discharge.
