Nursing Home Abuse: Medicare Fraud and Hospice

An Illinois hospice executive was charged with federal healthcare fraud for elevating the level of care for hospice patients who resided in the nursing homes that he controlled.  The facts are that this executive trained nurses to look for signs that patients would qualify for general inpatient care which resulted in higher payments than routine care.  In so doing, this executive increased Medicare/Medicaid payments by millions of dollars.  Hospice is supposed to be for those who are dying and in the last months of life.  Many of the residents in this case were not sick enough to qualify for hospice care.
